Welcome to Healthy Hunterdon, brought to you by Hunterdon Healthcare. This program will provide health, nutrition, and fitness tips from leading professionals,
I am Nicole Schaldone, a Master’s prepared Registered Dietitian with Advanced Gastroenterology and Nutrition, a specialty practice of Hunterdon Medical Center. Today’s topic is: Ten Ways to Cut a Hundred Calories.
A hundred extra calories per day could equal ten pounds of weight gain in a year. So if you could cut a hundred calories a day, you could lose that ten pounds in a year without really trying.
Number one… cut the oil. Try sautéing food with cooking spray or using low sodium chicken or vegetable broth. One tablespoon of oil equals a hundred and twenty calories.
Number two… drink water or zero calorie beverages. Drinking fruit juices and sodas adds the calories really quickly.
Number three… skip the cappuccino. Try making the switch to regular coffee. Skip the sugar. Three sugar packets with thirty three calories each… that’s a hundred calories… and watch the mild and cream. Try a non-dairy substitute.
Number four… try applesauce instead of oil when baking… or non-stick spray for pancakes... skip that oil.
Number five… modify portions. Bagels have a hundred calories per ounce. A typical bagel is about four ounces. Maybe if you eat half, you could cut out two hundred calories right there.
Number six… leave cheese out of sandwiches. That will save a hundred calories and stop at one dinner roll to save another hundred.
Number seven… skip the mayo or cream cheese. Use low fat whipped cream cheese to save yourself another hundred calories.
Number eight… watch out for added calories in salad. Two tablespoons of salad dressing is a hundred and forty calories. So if you glob on that dressing, you’re really adding those extra calories.
Number nine… make smart food substitutes. If you use skim milk instead of two percent, you’ll be cutting some calories… or try wheat crackers instead of those butter crackers… and cereal for pop-tarts. Another easy switch would be English muffin instead of a bagel… or grilled chicken instead of that fried chicken. Try switching out some better choices and you’ll easily cut out another hundred calories
